Maria laughed at that-even as her heart twisted at the confession.

This witch wouldn't stop until she'd shattered every shard of ice within Maria, would she?

"I think you'd go for more than three," Maria teased.

"Hmm," Em said, "maybe."

Helen Snippet

This week, we have a Helen snippet from Goddess of the Sea (Lesbians, Pirates, & Dragons: Book 2)—for the #lesficfri theme: “question.” 💙

Inside the surgeon's cabin, Emilia found a certain large, muscular woman sprawled across her surgery table.

Helen covered her eyes with two unwashed hands. "I'm ready," she said with a dramatic sigh. "Cut me open."

Emilia had no idea why Helen was covering her eyes, but she'd stopped asking questions by this point. "I don't cut people open for cramps, Helen."

Helen dropped her hands and sat up, her long, red braid swinging over her shoulder. "But you said there was a cure!"

Emilia knelt to retrieve a small, glass bottle from one of her wooden chests. "I said I'd make you a tincture." She straightened and held out the bottle, but Helen leaned away, as if it were some kind of explosive.

Not that she would've ever backed away from one of those.

With a grimace, Helen said, "Does it taste bad?"

"No worse than Judith's rum."

Maria wasn't sure whether to feel grateful or concerned. "Which one wants to eat me?"

Em offered an apologetic smile. "Nymeth."

Oh, the big, scary one!

Snippet and Sapphic Dragon Books

Em has five dragons. Maria has…Em. 🐉

"What she wanted?" Emilia repeated. "You think Catherine's ambitions have ever been that simple? Oh, you think the captain's ambitious. You think she's obsessive. You think she's manipulative, but she's none of those things, compared to Catherine. Why do you think Catherine keeps winning?"

Zain lifted his chin. "I knew Catherine."

"You think you did," Emilia said, "but trust me. No one knows Catherine. Not until you've been part of her game—and lost. There were a thousand ways Catherine might've survived, but do you know what none of those would've done-that this one did?" She pointed her finger at Zain. "This. You're the one giving Catherine what she wants, quartermaster."

Snippet – Sorry

The theme for this last week’s #lesficfri was “sorry,” and this scene from Goddess of the Sea (Lesbians, Pirates, & Dragons: Book 2) was the one that came to mind. So, here’s our captain refusing to let Em apologize for her PTSD.

Try not to feel shame over your mental health this week. It’s been a hard one. 💙

"Sorry."

"For what?" Maria said—with enough casual dismissiveness to stun Emilia into silence. She waved the flask impatiently, and Emilia took it.

"Thank you." Emilia lifted the flask to her lips.

Maria's gaze didn't waver. "Anytime, love."

Emilia spat out the first sip and swallowed the next.

Despite Maria's dismissive response, the shame continued to press against Emilia's chest. She took a few more sips, but the weight only seemed to grow.

"I didn't realize l'd—" Emilia stammered, "that my mind had—"

"I know," Maria interrupted.

Again ... dismissive. Yet, her eyes didn't match her tone.

Maria's gaze didn't flick away from Emilia the way her words had. No, those large, brown eyes remained steady and focused on Emilia—soft with concern.
