Sirens of Aletharia

I went ahead and added our sirens, Nerissa and Queen Amathea, to the Lesbian Pirates pageโ€”since you MAY be meeting them soon (no spoilers).

Keep in mind these are never totally accurate. There are limits to what I can customize. They arenโ€™t this thin, for one (but then, neither is Em). Aletharian sirens are naturally plus-sized, but youโ€™ll know that by the time you meet them.

As to whether or not youโ€™ll like them, itโ€™s hard to say. I enjoy Nerissa a bit, but Maria decidedly does not. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Sheโ€™s a very hungry siren. Iโ€™ll leave it at that.

You probably wonโ€™t have much of an opinion of Amathea until Book 3. Thatโ€™s intentional. After all, our characters donโ€™t either. Right now, sheโ€™s just a beautiful queen with sharp teeth and a hunger for flesh. Literally. ๐Ÿ˜œ

And of course, I used the same picrew as usual to make these because I like its fantasy features.

And for anyone who mightโ€™ve missed it, ebook and print editions of Goddess of the Sea will be available soon at this link:

Happy Pride (and an Emilia Teaser)

Happy Pride! โค๏ธ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

Text: Happy Pride Month!

Image: Girls kissing in a heart on a rainbow background.

I think this post has been in my drafts for well over a week by now, but I had to wait for this migraine to ease, just so I could proofread it.

At least it wasnโ€™t just me being forgetful again, though, right? ๐Ÿ˜…

I plucked a line from one of Mariaโ€™s scenes for the last teaser. So, for this one, I took a few from one of Emโ€™s.

Snippet on green fire background:

"Pain doesn't scare me anymore."

It wasn't a boast. Emilia felt no emotion whatsoever in saying it.

It was a factโ€”nothing more, nothing less.

Emilia's mother had killed the part of her that feared pain.

Regarding updates, I don’t have any new information to share yet, and I always feel silly sharing updates when there’s nothing new. I’m a shy introvert. Iโ€™m not used to talking unless I have something to say, you know? ๐Ÿ˜…

But I know people come to the website to find updates. So, I’ll try my best to share some recent book things, and maybe I won’t bore you to death in the process. ๐Ÿ’™

I’m still working as often and as quickly as I can, and I’m still hoping for very soon. Honestly, I feel like if life would cooperate with me for one week, or if there were twenty-eight hours in a day, instead of twenty-four, the book would be up already.

Seriously, I donโ€™t know about the rest of the world, but I think I speak for all moms when I say we need four more hours. Itโ€™sโ€ฆa lot sometimes.

I’m formatting print and ebook files at the moment, which sounds like one of the shorter steps of the process, except Iโ€™m incapable of leaving things alone.

As I read through each chapter, I tend to find things I want to change (again), and that, of course, wasnโ€™t part of the plan.

If you’ve been with me a while, you know I’ve already rewritten this book a gazillion times (that might even be the real number; I wouldnโ€™t know because I lost count ages ago).

Part of my problem is my own mind. Iโ€™ll never believe anything done by me could be good enough, but maybe (hopefully!), thatโ€™s just the anxiety and depression talking. ๐Ÿคž

That being said, I also believe the moment I stop listening to the voice in my head that tells to do it one more time will be the moment when I needed to do it one more time.

Is that paranoia or a good rule of thumb? I have no idea.

Of course, the kind of rewriting I do now is nothing like the earlier rewrites. Early on, I’d just start a new document each time because I was changing so much, anyway. Now, when I rewrite something, itโ€™s minor. Tinkering, really. I’m long past the point in this book where I change the storyline itself.

As an example, one of my recent rewrites was a chapter that involved Em’s panic attacks. I was concerned it was a bit triggering in Em’s point-of-view. So, I rewrote it in Maria’s point-of-view because taking a step back from it all can make it easier to digest.

It’s a minor adjustment, but it still takes time. It’s new words that have to be re-edited.

I’m nearly to the end now. I hope to get there within a week, but as time has shown, a migraine or a child’s sickness can throw it all off.

So, I’m just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

Believe me. I want to release this one and start writing The Dragon Child as much, if not way more, than anyone else. I just donโ€™t want to sacrifice quality to do it.

I remember when I was writing the first draft of Pirates of Aletharia, I spent months on the map alone, and it made me so depressedโ€”because I wasnโ€™t making any โ€œprogressโ€ on the book itself.

But creating the geography of Aletharia wasnโ€™t just a matter of deciding on continent shapes or names. It was researching climates and geography to make sure I was putting my mountains, deserts, etc., in the right places. It wasโ€ฆa lot.

Things are always more time-consuming than I expect, and yet, I get frustrated with myself as if they arenโ€™t. ๐Ÿ˜…

Well, anyway, maybe I haven’t bored you too much with some of the less glamorous writing details.

I hope youโ€™re having a wonderful Pride Month and arenโ€™t having to deal with any of the people who try to ruin it. ๐Ÿ’™

I know all too well what itโ€™s like to be made to feel ashamed of who you are. Please, let this month be a reminder to you that youโ€™re amazing and worthy of love, just as you are. ๐Ÿ’™

I appreciate and adore you all so much. ๐Ÿ’™

A Maria Teaser

Sorry for the lack of updates. I genuinely thought Iโ€™d be on here more, and time just keeps running away from me.

Do you know those weeks where by the end, you’re begging for just one thing to go right, just to break the spell? Last week was one of those for me.

This weekโ€”well, thereโ€™s been several setbacks already, but itโ€™s still early! Things could smooth out. ๐Ÿ’™

I hope last week was a little better for you than for me, but if it wasn’t, Iโ€™m hoping this oneโ€™s better for you! ๐Ÿ’™

The new link isnโ€™t up yet, and I donโ€™t have an exact date or time. It could be one more week. It could be more. (I hope not, but it could.)

When it’s time, I’ll share two updates: one when it’s “in review,” and the next when the link goes live. ๐Ÿ’™

In the meantime, I have our weekly teaser, if you enjoy those. ๐Ÿ’™

I thought I shared this one already, but apparently, it never made it over here.

But that just means Iโ€™ll have two for you this week! ๐Ÿ’™

Sure, you donโ€™t, Maria. ๐Ÿ˜œ

On an unrelated note, do you know how hard it is to find G-rated lines in Mariaโ€™s point-of-view?

For everyone who’s sent messages or emails recently, I promise Iโ€™ll reply to those as soon as I can. ๐Ÿ’™

The downside of spending every free moment preparing a book for a release is that I miss a lot. ๐Ÿ˜… Iโ€™ll read them all soon, though! ๐Ÿ’™

I appreciate you all so much! ๐Ÿ’™

I’ll be back with a new snippet in the next day or soโ€”and the new book link as soon as possible! ๐Ÿ’™

Sending lots of love. ๐Ÿ’™

Snippet and Sapphics with Swords

I hope youโ€™re having a wonderful week! ๐Ÿ’™

Iโ€™m a few days late in sharing it here, but I have our weekly snippet and a fun announcement! ๐Ÿ’™

Snippet

Never blame the dragons. ๐Ÿ‰

(In front of Emilia.)

Snippet on blue sea background:

"We had vastly different childhoods."

Maria raised both eyebrows. "It was my sex life that told you that?" she said. "Not the dragons?"

Em turned to frown at her. "No, no, no. You have it all wrong." She held up her hand. "The dragons were the most normal part of my childhood!"

Maria couldn't help but laugh. "You're only proving my point, love."

A Helen Snippet

Being ship surgeon of the Wicked Fate means dealing with Helen. A lot. ๐Ÿ˜…

Excerpt on background of bottles and tinctures:

When Emilia returned, she found a large, muscular woman sprawled across her surgery table.

Helen covered her eyes with two unwashed hands. "I'm ready," she said with a dramatic sigh. "Cut me open."

Emilia had no idea why Helen was covering her eyes, but she'd stopped asking questions at this point. "I don't cut people open for stomach cramps, Helen."

Helen dropped her hands and sat up. Her long, red braid swung for a moment.
"So, there's no cure?"

Emilia knelt to retrieve a small, glass bottle from one of her wooden chests. "I made you a tincture."

She straightened and held out the bottle, but Helen leaned away, as if it were some kind of explosive.

Not that she would've *ever* backed away from one of those.

With a grimace, Helen said, "Does it taste bad?"

"No worse than Judith's rum."

I enjoy sharing snippetsโ€”if for no other reason than that it gets me out of my head for a moment and makes me stop listening to that endless loop of: “I’m terrible. Everything I do is terrible. Why am I even trying? Etc., etc.”

The only problem is when I need to choose a snippet, my anxiety kicks in with: “Don’t choose the wrong one! Oh, no, I’m going to choose the wrong one!”

My brain’s fun, don’t you think? ๐Ÿ˜…

But that’s one of the things I like about hashtag games. A few years ago, the writing community on Twitter had tons of them. There aren’t as many anymore, but one of my favorites is still going. ๐Ÿ’™

Searching for a specific word in the document means it’s less of a choice, and my anxiety cooperates better with that arrangement. ๐Ÿ˜…

It does result in some pretty random snippetsโ€”but snippets, nonetheless!

The word for this week was “woman,” and when I searched and this scene popped up, I thought, “Well, maybe my Helen fans will enjoy this one.” ๐Ÿ˜‚

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed it, and I hope you have a wonderful week! ๐Ÿ’™

Lots of love,

Britney

Latest Snippet

Happy New Year! ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š

I couldโ€™ve sworn I shared this snippet here last week, but apparently, I did not. ๐Ÿ˜… So, hereโ€™s the latest snippet from Goddess of the Sea. ๐Ÿ’š

This one is taken from one of Zainโ€™s (unsuccessful) lectures.

Itโ€™s hard being quartermaster to Captain Maria Welles. ๐Ÿ˜…

Snippet on green dragon-fire background:

"After what Catherine did to her, Em should be the least forgiving of your... mistake."

The ounce of self-preservation that had stopped Zain from making the accusation out loud was all that kept Maria's sword in its scabbard.

"Instead, she's out there, viciously guarding your secrets like some kind ofโ€”" A look of genuine misery crossed the quartermaster's face the moment his own analogy caught up with him. "Oh, you know, like aโ€”"

It was too late, though.

Maria was already laughing. "Dragon?"
