Mental Health Awareness

May was Mental Health Awareness Month, and things have been so tough that I never even took a moment to talk about it. Ironic, right? ๐Ÿ˜…

If youโ€™ve read my books (especially Goddess of the Sea or The Reign of Darkness), you know mental illness is a major theme. I try to be honest in real life (like now, for instance) about my own struggles with mental illnessโ€”because I think hiding it only increases the stigma. And I try to bring that same honesty into my books.

I believe sanitized portrayals of mental illness only hurt us. No human being responds perfectly to trauma, and fictional characters shouldnโ€™t either. Mental illness isnโ€™t meant to be pretty. It can be exhausting, overpowering, and scary, and some of the symptoms (the physical ones, I mean) might even be things people consider โ€œgross.โ€

Itโ€™s hard to write honest portrayals of mental illnessโ€”because it often feels like no one cares about that. They just want excitement and action. On top of that, it means youโ€™re going to see the word โ€œunlikeable,โ€ especially if your characters are women. People treat us this way in real life, too; theyโ€™re just a little less shameless about it.

Butโ€ฆsomeone out there is struggling and needs to feel less alone. Someone out there needs this story. Thatโ€™s why we do itโ€”even when itโ€™s scary, even when it hurts, even when it feels like no one cares. ๐Ÿ’š

The Coolest Announcement ๐Ÿ˜

I have the coolest news to share this week! โค๏ธ

I found out this week that The Reign of Darkness was voted Best Paranormal Romance on a Best Lesfic of 2020 list! โค๏ธ

Iโ€™m so amazed and grateful (and sort of in shock, still ๐Ÿ˜…). I poured my whole soul into that book (and series), and I canโ€™t tell you how much it means to me to know that people enjoyed it. โค๏ธ

I love you all so much. Thank you for giving Rose and Kara a place in your hearts. โค๏ธ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’œ

And be sure to check out the whole list! There are lots of awesome lesfic authors on there! โค๏ธ

Teaser: Hatred

For this Teaser Day, hereโ€™s Rose taking a stand against hatred in The Assassins of Light, Book Three of the Creatures of Darkness Series.

โ€ชAlways relevant, I think, but definitely right now. โค๏ธโ€ฌ

โ€œHatred doesnโ€™t win with numbers or weapons. It wins with silence. It wins when people sweep it under the rug or try to justify it. It wins when people defend the indefensible. It wins when weโ€™re too scared or too apathetic to fight back. And I wonโ€™t let it win. Not today. Not ever.โ€

And if youโ€™re out protesting right now, please, take care of yourselves and be safe. โค๏ธ Love you guys. โค๏ธ

World Mental Health Day

Since itโ€™s World Mental Health Day, Iโ€™m sharing this scene from The Assassins of Light againโ€”as a reminder that mental illness doesnโ€™t mean youโ€™re less or weak or any other stigma people have attached to it. Itโ€™s okay to not be okay. ๐Ÿ’™

If you follow me on social media, you probably know that I struggle a lot with mental illness, too. That’s why it’s so important to me to write characters like Rose, who have PTSD and depressionโ€”or other mental illnesses. I want you to know that, even if you feel alone in this, you’re not. ๐Ÿ’™ And if you ever need internet hugs, I’m happy to send them. ๐Ÿ’™ Love you guys. Take care of yourselves. ๐Ÿ’™

Mental Health Awareness Month

Since Mental Health Awareness Month is coming to a close, hereโ€™s the scene from The Assassins of Light where Kara is just…amazing during Roseโ€™s panic attack. ๐Ÿ’™

And a reminder that bad mental health days happen, and itโ€™s not your fault. Itโ€™s okay to reach out. Itโ€™s okay to need medication. Itโ€™s okay to need therapy. Youโ€™re doing great. ๐Ÿ’™

I love you guys. Keep fighting. ๐Ÿ’™
